Abstract

We use the constituent quark model to calculate s-wave NN̄ scattering via quark rearrangement into three-meson states. With a quark hamiltonian containing only a two-body confining interaction, we obtain a qualitatively correct description of the recent LEAR measurements. We can assign more than half of the s-wave annihilation cross section to quark rearrangement. The results are, however, sensitive to the matching of the long-range meson exchange potential with the quark mediated annihilation potential.
