Abstract
The general theory of relativity is a geometrical theory of gravity which predicts on the one hand how matter modifies the geometry of space-time and on the other hand how the geometry of space-time influences the motion of matter. In order to test general relativity, it is therefore necessary to probe the geometry of space-time. This must be done very accurately if the results of this theory are to be distinguished from those of Newtonian gravity. To determine which class of experiments would provide the most accurate test of general relativity, it may therefore be advantageous to consider the general question of measuring the geometry of space-time.
