Abstract

The paper presents an adaptive Kalman filter based linear dynamic estimator of power system states, and validates its performance in a real-time simulation environment. OPAL-RT ePHASORsim is used as the real time environment, and procedure of developing the dynamic test case is discussed in detail. The estimator is based on measurements available from phasor measurement units (PMUs). On OPAL-RT platform, it is validated that the execution of the estimator can be completed before the arrival of each complete set of PMU measurements. The performance of the proposed method is also compared with extended Kalman filter based estimator on New England 39 bus test system under various disturbances such as three phase fault, sudden load changes, and load outage.
