Abstract

This chapter presents arguments for the use of oral testimonia traditions and written testimonia collections in the New Testament ( NT) itself. It discusses the function of the scriptural quotation or allusion within the NT work. The chapter provides evidence that the NT work draws on a previous oral or written testimonia source (whether Jewish or Christian). It determines as far as possible the original form and function of that testimonia source. The chapter examines Christian literature outside the NT to determine what light these traditions can shed on the NT passages. It also examines discrete sections of the NT: Paul's writings; the formula citations in Matthew; the speeches in Acts; and Hebrews 1:5-2:8. Parallels with NT passages show that discussion on the essence of the law was common in early Christian literature as well. Keywords: Christian literature; Hebrews; Jewish; Matthew; New Testament ( NT); Paul's writings; testimonia source
