Abstract

Malignant tumors of the genitourinary tract represent a wide spectrum of disease. Included among those diseases are the highly curable primary germ cell tumors of the testis, the most frequent tumor of males between the ages of 20–30 years. The cure for testicular germ cell tumors is dependent on the widely applied chemotherapy regimens developed over the past decade. Also included is prostatic carcinoma, the most frequent tumor of males in the 7th and 8th decades of life. Chemotherapy has a much less important role at present in treating prostatic carcinoma, but it is a hormonally responsive tumor. Urothelial tumors, for which the most rapid advancement in the introduction of chemotherapy has been seen in the past 3 years, have the potential for most dramatic improvement in therapy. Primary clear cell carcinomas of the kidney remain refractory to systemic chemotherapy.
