Abstract

Abstract Testicular and epididymal sperm numbers were measured in 41 sexually rested Friesian bulls of from 15 to 17 months of age. Testis weight was poorly correlated with live weight (r = 0.16) but was strongly correlated with testicular sperm numbers (r = 0.79). Although the cauda epididymis is a major sperm storage organ, its sperm content was not strongly correlated with either testis weight (r = 0.19) or total testicular sperm (r = 0.31). Comparison of the data with those reported for sexually rested mature bulls suggests that the cauda epididymis had only partly developed its storage role in these young bulls. Differences in sperm output among bulls of a comparable age could be the consequence of variation in the development of this storage capacity.
