Abstract

Sequences of successive reversal, intradimensional and extradimensional shifts involving color-form, weight-length, and texture-number stimuli yielded consistent test-retest means of comparable magnitude for both reversal and intradimensional shifts. Though initial extradimensional shifts were slower than retest extr4dimensional shifts, reversal and intradimensional shifts were faster than extradimensional shifts in all conditions. These sequences should be adequate for test-retest assessments of attention, and of rigidity, at the group level. The weight-length/color-form/texture-number sequence is preferable when a concern exists for the consistency of the scores of individual subjects as well as group means. This sequence yielded the largest test-retest correlations as well as the highest estimates of the reliability of three comparable shift scores. In all three problem sequences tested, large numbers of individual subjects had identical test-retest scores in both reversal and intradimensional shift tasks.
