Abstract

With an efficiency of 10% at an input peak power of 900 W at λ = 1.064 μm,1 optical fibers have proved to be almost as efficient as the best commercially available frequency-doubling crystals today. The only viable model put forth so far to explain second harmonic generation (SHG) in fibers has only partly been able to account for all the different experimental data reported. The most difficult part for this model has been how to explain the origin and alignment of defects in the glass material. To investigate what defects in the glass might cause SHG, electron spin resonance measurements as well as UV-light preparation of the fibers have been performed.
