Abstract

Considering forward Compton scattering by nucleons and deuterons and approximating the deuteron by free nucleons above the pion production threshold the three cross section sum rules for the nucleon and deuteron magnetic moments are combined to a relation containing only known constants and a low-energy integral which agrees with the predicted value. The result concerning the validity of the sum rules supports other tests by Gerasimov [4], Drell and Hearn [6] and Pagels [2] based on pion photoproduction data below 1 GeV.
