Abstract

A thin detector for particle fluxes as high as 50 kHz/mm 2 is required for the LHCb inner tracking system. Gaseous detectors with a single stage of amplification as well as detectors with amplification distributed over many stages have been tested in hadronic beam. All these detectors are fast, have very high-rate capabilities and excellent time and space resolutions. The major problem arises from discharges in the presence of highly ionizing particles.
