Abstract

A middle-aged Samoan man had an ependymoma of the fourth ventricle partially resected and afterwards treatment with radiotherapy and longterm Dexamethasone. Four months later he presented in a physically debilitated and mentally confused state and was found to have gram-negative septicemia. Terminally he developed melenous stools, a paralytic ileus and finally multiorgan failure. Postmortem the small and large bowel mucosa was congested, granular and friable with ‘tram track’ ulceration of the sigmoid colon.
