Abstract

Summary Four topical aspects of contemporary religious life are examined here Our purpose is to ascertain whether or not they contain the seeds for a public reappearance of religion. These four aspects are the following: - the role played by the churches in the overthrow of state communism in some of the former iron-curtain countries; - New Age and its ‘new religiosity’; - the new charismatic movements amongst the Christians; - the growing influence of fundamentalism. These movements are tested according to the following working hypothesis with respect to a possible reappearance of religion: the reappearance must be of such a nature that it manifests a marked reappreciation (in thought and in social practice) of the religious dimension as being a constitutive factor of our humanity.
