Abstract
The motion of steps on the (0 0 1) surface of MgAl 2O 4 spinel is discussed. Atomic force microscopy observations of surface faceting and evaporation after heating to high temperatures are reported. The structural relationship between single and double-surface steps on the MgAl 2O 4(0 0 1) surface is established. Mechanisms for the formation, motion and dissociation of the double steps are proposed.
