Abstract

The literature data concerning about 650 intermetallic ternary phases of rare earths were examined. The deviations in the molar volumes of cerium and ytterbium with respect to those of other rare earths were utilized to summarize schematically the behaviour of these elements in their alloys. The effects of various metals on the behaviour of cerium and ytterbium are related, discussed and summarized in two analogous diagrams which include both binary and ternary compounds.
