Abstract

Ten species of termites are known from the semi-arid plain along Sudan's Red Sea coast. Seven species are well known as inhabitants of the arid and semi-arid areas of the eastern sub-Saharan Africa and Arabia. Of these species, Psammotermes hybostoma is the most widely distributed. Of the other three species, two were recorded from a single locality, while the other, Microtermes najdensis, was recorded from Africa for the first time. This termite is known mainly from the cultivated area of the Tokar Delta where it is extremely abundant and causes severe losses to cotton and other crops. It also exists in cultivated watercourses along the coast, which receive water from the Red Sea Hills.
