Abstract

The article, adapted from the book "Underbug: An Obsessive Tale of Termites and Technology," by Lisa Margonelli, discusses the impacts of termite populations on plant patterns. Topics include the impacts of termite mounds on soil quality, the similarity of vegetation patterns in Africa to leopard spot patterns, and the impact of termites on drought resistance by plants. Research by mathematician Corina Tarnita and ecologist Rob Pringle is addressed.
