Abstract

Termites are important soil-borne insect-pests of fruit crops that feed on cellulose, particularly the wood. They are social, polyphagous and polymorphic insects, living in large colonies comprising of queen, king, soldiers and workers in nests. The nests are constructed both above and below the ground. Peak activity of termites in Punjab is during April-June and September-October. Trials were carried out during 2016 and 2017 for eco-friendly management of termites at Ludhiana, Punjab. Eco-friendly trapping of termites is affected by burying gul (maize cobs without grains) filled 24-holed earthen pot traps of diameter 33 cm, with lid @ 14 traps per acre in termite infested orchards of pear, ber, peach, grape and amla during first week of April and September. Earthen pot traps should have their neck outside the soil surface. These traps should be removed from soil after 20 days of installation and collected termites should be destroyed by dipping in water containing a few drops of diesel. The termite traps were found very effective in attracting the termites and reducing their population in the orchards under experiment.
