Abstract

The following article is based on a Bachelor thesis with the title “Terminologie Mapping: Grundlagen und aktuelle Standardisierung” which was written in summer 2011 at Hochschule Darmstadt. The thesis focuses on the basics of terminology mapping which is the creation of cross-linking between different controlled vocabularies. Foundations of terminology mapping can be referred to the seminal publication of Doerr (2001). The second part is describing the recent standardization efforts which have advanced in the last years. More and more standards on national and international levels have been published which take terminology mapping into account as a method of establishing interoperability. The standard “Simple knowledge organization system” (SKOS) by the W3C is also a topic. This standard aims to represent controlled vocabularies for the Semantic Web. Even though there are still some problems in modeling classic controlled vocabularies (especially thesaurus) in SKOS, this standard can be seen as a huge step forward for vocabularies out of the specialized information domains towards the Semantic Web. In the end we come to a conclusion about the standardization efforts and take a look on the possibilities to integrate terminology mappings in the Semantic Web.
