So elusive are many of these that prognosis and effects of various treatments are often seriously misjudged. It is for this reason that the record of this patient, illustrating many of these pitfalls, is presented.The Patient. This patient, a 49 year old woman, complained of swelling of the ankles beginning three years ago. The past history was irrelevant.
