Abstract

© 2011, INASL 18 Results: The mean age of cases 41.72 ± 0.71 and controls was 41.38 ± 11.31 years, respectively. Male to female ratio was 2.15:1 and 1.85:1, respectively in cases and controls (p < 0.001). Alcoholic liver disease 15 (25%), hepatitis B 14 (23.33%), and cryptogenic cirrhosis 15 (25%) constituted predominant causes of cirrhosis in this study. Mean total cholesterol, mean HDL, mean LDL and mean triglyceride values were lower in cases (122.8 ± 47.57, 32.26 ± 16.06, 75.31 ± 33.12, 78.5 ± 40.37) compared to controls (173.7 ± 41.04, 41.27±9.69, 112.95 ± 35.22, 104.95 ± 53.64) and it was statistically significant (p < 0.05). Out of 60 cirrhotic patients 4 patients died during follow-up. Mean total cholesterol and mean HDL were very low in non-survivors (72 ± 55.6, 47.75 ± 40.4) compared to the cases that survived (126.45 ± 45.37, 80.69 ± 39.8) and it was statistically significant (p < 0.05). Conclusion: Low total cholesterol and low HDL in cirrhosis indicates a poor prognosis in cirrhosis.
