Abstract
This article publishes an annotated edition of a previously unknown account of the myth of Procne and Philomela. It is about a relatively long scholion on Soph. El. 147â149 preserved in the Moschopulean manuscript of Vienna, Ãsterreichische Nationalbibliothek (ÃNB), Phil. gr. 161 (Diktyon 71275) (= Xr), copied by Konstantinos á½ ÎεÏÎ¶á¾¶Ï (ho Ketzas) in 1412. The scholion will be examined in the context of the Moschopulean manuscripts of Sophocles. The narrative will be compared with other Greek and Latin accounts of the myth of Procne and Philomela, emphasizing the characteristics of the scholion. While direct parallels to other sources cannot be spotted and its origin remains unknown, Xrâs scholion displays similarities to the Trikilinian scholia on Aristophanesâ Aves 212e, α and β (HOLWERDA 1991), Tzetzesâ scholion on Hesiodâs Opera et Dies 568 Î Î±Î½Î´Î¹Î¿Î½Î¯Ï (Pandionis; 566ter GAISFORD 1823), and with Eustathiosâ Commentarii ad Homeri Odysseam (II 215,13 STALLBAUM 1826)
