Abstract

This chapter covers a brief introduction to the life and work of Teresa Deevy, and includes her one-act play, The King of Spain’s Daughter, and its production history. Annie Kinsella, the main character, seeks escape from her humdrum life through daydreams. Her tyrannous, domineering father loses his temper one day when she is late bringing him dinner. He gives her an ultimatum: marry and settle down with Jim Harris, a miserly, jealous young man or spend five years of indentured work in a factory. She accepts the former but flees in dread of a loveless marriage.
