Abstract

A male fetus had a well circumscribed, 2.5 x 2.3 cm. cystic and solid mass on the left side of the bladder on sonography performed a t 31 weeks of gestation (fig. 1). The possible diagnoses were retroperitoneal teratoma or cystic neuroblastoma. At birth a swelling was noted in the left abdominal cavity. Palpation revealed a firm, freely moving 5 X 5 cm. mass and an empty left scrotum. Abdominal x-ray showed opacity in the left flank and chest x-ray was normal. Sonography on day 5 of life confirmed a 4.3 X 5.8 cm. pelvic mass containing liquid and tissue. Tumor markers, including urinary vanillylmandelic acid and homovanillic acid, were within the normal range. u-Fetoprotein was 7,980 mg./ml. Cystography demonstrated grade I11 left vesicorenal reflux with displacement of the left ureter toward the midline. On day 13 of life left transverse laparotomy revealed a n encapsulated, well circumscribed tumor in the left undetestis' The left 'permatic vessels and left were found on the upper Pole of the undescended testis, which was above the left side of the bladder dome. The retroperitoneum FIG. 1. Transverse sonography a t 31 weeks of gestation shows 2.5 x 2.3 cm. cystic mass ( M ) with hyperechogenic parietal node on left side of bladder (B).
