Abstract

We report the response at terahertz frequencies of NbN/AIN/NbN tunnel junctions. Using quasi-optical coupling techniques and an optically pumped far-infrared laser, we have observed photon assisted steps below and above the gap voltage at 0.98 THz We have also observed a reduction of the gap voltage compared with the theoretical calculations. The receiver noise performances for the all-NbN SIS junctions were analyzed using Tucker's quantum theory of mixing. The results showed that DSB receiver noise temperatures of below 3 hv/KB can be achieved by using our NbN junctions for frequencies up to 2 THz.
