Abstract
The article shows that the traditional definition of literary evaluation is inadequate in today’s context. In the first part, it focuses on literary evaluation from the point of view of literary axiology and raises two questions: whether values are an integral part of literary-axiological research and how to approach their treatment. In the second part, it presents the modern understanding of literary evaluation, which on an empirical level appears as a very multifaceted, complex social process, which presents a unique challenge to literary research. First of all, because in the field of literary studies it is currently not possible to recognize a consistent use of the term “literary evaluation”, which of course means that the understanding of the act or acts of literary evaluation also differ, so it is difficult to give a definition that would be their (all-encompassing) basis – and at the same time it would not be very abstract. Definitions of this kind – and F. Worthmann’s is presented in the article – need to be understood primarily as a (more or less appropriate) axiological methodological tool for the analysis of various individual acts of literary evaluation. Researching literary evaluation is also difficult because, under the influence of major social changes, the evaluation of literature has been stratified into various forms of hidden and overt acts of evaluation, which are directed by different, often difficult to prove interests, aesthetic, cognitive and ethical pluralism or relativism, diverse – often unformed – value criteria, and so on. It therefore seems all the more important that at least the representatives of highly institutionalized evaluation approach it thoughtfully, with as clearly developed value criteria and methodological starting points as possible, with explicit terminology and, as far as possible, a reflected ideational horizon against which they evaluate.
