Abstract

The Spousal Theology of Christoph Lebreton. A Systematic Analysis of some Aspects of the Writings of the Martyr of Tibhirine This article presents a study of certain elements of spousal theology in the writings of Christophe Lebreton, one of the seven martyrs of Tibhirine. The following aspects of Lebreton’s works are brought to the fore: the eucological context of his writings; specific features of spousal theology, such as the symbol of the Kiss, to express the mystery of communication and the foundation for conversion; the relationship to the Bridegroom as an experience of purification; the presence and impact of filial trust in the Virgin Mary. Alongside the purgative, illuminative and unitive ways of the spiritual life, the way of poverty, the way of the affections and the via pulchritudinis appear in Lebreton’s writings as they are experienced by the writer.
