Abstract

In order to improve the strain tolerance of BPSCCO, tape reinforcing the ceramic core with metal fibers was investigated. A method for processing the silver fiber reinforced composite tape was developed and the tension stress-strain-critical current relationships for the monolithic and composite tapes have been developed at 77 K. The addition of silver fibers (15% by volume) improved the average irreversible strain of the composite tape to 0.3%, a 50% improvement over the monolithic tape. A model developed based on the constituent properties of the tapes was used to verify the performance of the tapes.
