Abstract

To clarify the size effect on strength of ceramics, tensile and bend strengths were measured for a sintered silicon nitride. The tensile strengths for specimens of 6, 10, 14 and 20mm diameters were 523, 460, 461 and 400 MPa. The strength decreased with increasing effective volume. The Weibull modulus estimated from the size effect on tensile strength was 15. The Weibull modulus estimated from the distribution of bend and tensile strengths ranged from 11 to 27. The size effect on tensile strength was proved to be essentially interpreted by Weibull statistics. Fracture surfaces were examined by SEM, and the flaw size of the fracture origin is discussed in terms of Griffith theory.
