Abstract

Ordinary woven fabrics (bi-axial fabrics) are composed of warps and fillings, and their modulus of elasticity and tensile resistance in bias direction are lower as compared with those in warp and filling directions. In order to improve these characteristics, new “Tetra-axial Woven Fabrics” composed of warps, fillings and bias yarns were made and assessment was performed on the physical properties of fabrics. To clarify the effect of difference in the structure between bi-axial and tetra-axial fabrics in load-elongation curves and tensile resistances, the moduli of elasticity and tearing strengths were investigated, based on the technique by F. L. Scardino and F. K. Ko.Tensile resistance and modulus of elasticity of bi-axial fabrics are low in bias direction. But for tetra-axial fabrics, the dependence of tensile strength on direction is very small. The tearing strength of tetra-axial fabrics is very larger than that of bi-axial fabrics.
