Abstract

Silk fibers from the Japanese oak silkworm Antheraea yamamai are treated with hot . dimethylsulfoxide, and the changes in the fiber structure are investigated. The treatment structurally modifies silk sericin so that it becomes a tough. pleated sheet structure and also promotes crystallization of the fibroin. The treatment is effective at enhancing the tensile properties of degummed silk fibers and suppressing fibrillation through abrasion in the wet state.
