Abstract

In this paper we discuss, with the help of a simple model, the role of family resource endowments in determining the extent of land leased-in or leased-out by a household. This becomes important when the market for some of these resources is either not functioning at all or is functioning imperfectly. We focus on three such resources which have some relevance in Indian agriculture. These are (1) the family's managerial skill, (2) its endowment of human labour, and (3) its endowment of draft animal labour. Household level data from six villages of Maharashtra and Andhra Pradesh are also utilized to test some of the hypotheses.
