Abstract

The German exploration activities started in 1969. Prospecting and exploration activities are predominantly carried out by the “Arbeitsgemeinschaft meerestechnisch gewinnbare Rohstoffe (AMR)”, founded in 1974. In 1975 the international joint venture OMI (Ocean Management Inc.) was constituted by the national AMR together with Inco/Canada, the Japanese consortium Domco and Sedco/U.S.A. First of all, the unknown terrain has to be surveyed and mapped geophysically. Sampling the seabed is the next step in our routine exploration strategy. In the case of nodule deposits, where the population density changes within small distances, deep-sea television is used for the continuous observation of the sea floor. The huge extension of marine deposits and a water column up to 5000 m compels us to apply other methods than for continental ore deposits. Every prospecting or exploration step is accompanied by feasibility studies. Their optimistic judgement is the reason for 10 years of German exploration activities, but not imaginable without the strong governmental support.
