Abstract

The E.N.T. Clinic of Tepecik Educational Hospital Izmir, Turkey, has been using voice prosthesis for 10 years. We tried using all of the prostheses sold on the market. Several scientific studies had been carried out to find the most eligible one. A total of 251 laryngectomies have been performed at our clinic since 1993: 204 Provox, 17 Blom-Singer, 5 Groningen and Turvox were used. Twenty cases were speaking with oesophageal speech. The intelligibility of the prostheses was measured with phonetically balanced word lists. The results were 72–92% with mono- and double-syllable words with Provox, 53–77% with Blom-Singer, 52–75% with Groningen and 67–87% with Turvox. The average device life was 18 months with Provox and 5 with the others. The complications were minor. There were a small number of fungal colonisations. The reason for this is the antifungal activity of Turkish Yougurt, especially Kephir. As a result, we can say that Provox is the most eligible prosthesis. The Turkish prosthesis, Turvox, is new, and the scientific studies are still ongoing. It is very cheap, but we still have a long way to go.
