Abstract
Background: In 2015 we have a epidemic of Syphilis with more than 65,000 cases in adults. Syphilis is a IST with the ability to cause congenital disease. We analyze reports of congenital syphilis in the last 10 years(2007-2017). We evaluated the diagnosis period, the number of cases, prenatal care, and the lethality. Methods & Materials: Analysis of data obtained from the official site of the secretariat of health of the government of Bahia www3.saude.ba.gov.br Results: From 9056 cases: 2007-240; 2008- 235; 2009-319; 2010-404; 2011-559; 2012-677; 2013-933; 2014-1197; 2015-1481; 2016-1813; 2017-1198. Diagnosed in the prenatal period: 2007-90(37.5%); 2008- 89(37.8%); 2009-127(39.8%); 2010-124 (30%); 2011-172(30.8%); 2012-246(36.3%); 2013-365(39.1%), 2014-540(45%); 2015-688 (48.6%), 2016-956 (52.7%); 2017-715(59.6%). Diagnosed at the time of childbirth or curettage: 2007-76(31.7%); 2008-84(35.7%); 2009-87(27.2%); 2010-119(29.5%); 2011-172(30.8%); 2012-189(27.9%); 2013-294 (31.5%) 2014-372(31.1%); 2015-497(33.6%); 2016-512(28.2%); 2017-257(21.5%) Prenatal care:2007-155(64.6%); 2008-164(69.8%); 2009-225(70.5%); 2010-233(57.7%); 2011-339(61%); 2012-414(61.2%); 2013-599(64.2%); 2014-819(68.4%); 2015-1033 (69.8%); 2016-1412(77.9%); 2017-955(79.7%). Did not perform prenatal care: 2007-56 (23%); 2008- 55 (23.4%); 2009-64 (20.1%), 2010-77 (19.1%); 2011-115 (20.1%); 2012-125 (18.5%); 2013-145(15.5%), 2014-192(16%); 2015-191(12.9%); 2016-215(11.9%); 2017-132(11%). Number of abortion/stillbirths: 2007-51(21.2%); 2008- 31(13.2%); 2009-4(1.3%), 2010-5 (1.6%); 2011-9(1.6%); 2012-19(2.8%); 2013-21(2.3%), 2014-24(2%); 2015-26(1.7%), 2016-49 (2.7%); 2017-20(1.7%). Conclusion: A significant increase in the number of cases of congenital syphilis with climax in the years 2015 and 2016 was observed in agreement with the epidemic in Brazil. There is also an effort to diagnose as shown by the increase in prenatal care, reaching 79.7% in 2017, against 64.6% in 2007. This is also seen by the progressive decrease in the number of pregnant women who did not have prenatal care, 23% in 2007 and 11% in 2017. Unfortunately, even a mean percentage of 30% of congenital syphilis was diagnosed only during delivery and/or curettage. Despite the increase in the number of cases of congenital syphilis, lethality fell sharply from 2009, always below 3%.
