Abstract

Temporary intravascular shunts (TIVSs) provide expedited restoration of distal perfusion and shortened ischemia time in the setting of arterial injury. As a damage control adjunct, shunts restore perfusion while life-threatening injuries are treated or the patient is evacuated to a higher level of care. Published single-center experiences with TIVSs from military and civilian centers demonstrated them to be safe and effective, extending the window of opportunity for limb salvage. The objective of this study was to analyze TIVSs from a multicenter national registry of vascular injury and to characterize the impact of shunt utilization on limb salvage.
