Abstract

AbstractIn the contemporary urban context, the concept of Temporary Urbanism is debated due to its different names, definitions, and heterogeneity. This type of intervention makes use of empty spaces—private, public or open—for a short period of time. This article explores the importance of citizen participation, associated challenges and opportunities, and focuses on the construction process of a temporary “SLAB” intervention erected in the summer of 2018 in Bologna, Italy. An understanding of the level of community engagement achieved, and the social and physical effects of a city’s life are established. The urban intervention was introduced into an existing installation, at Piazza Scaravilli, as an urban transformation in response to its needs. An ethnographic study approach was conducted at Piazza Scaravilli on the urban interaction before and during construction. This study demonstrates this installation’s influence, focusing specifically on the social impact on the spatial, temporal, economic and cultural contexts, and the possible solutions that temporary urbanism can provide for unused spaces.KeywordsUrban identityCity transformationTemporary urbanismCommunity engagement
