Abstract

The diagnosis of anaphylaxis and mast cell activation syndrome (MCAS) relies largely on history with laboratories assisting in diagnosis as an objective demonstration of mast cell activation.1-3 Serum tryptase is the most readily available and typically used marker in this regard.4 Consensus expert opinion recommends using an objective rise in mast cell mediators as a requirement for the diagnosis of MCAS, and 1 equation that is typically used is an increase in serum tryptase level above the individual's baseline of 20% plus 2 ng/mL.
