Abstract
Between 1954 – 1956 the CSIRO Division of Fisheries carried out a study of the fish and related flora and fauna of Lake Macquarie. This was to determine whether there had been, as suggested, a reduction in the fish populations and, if so, whether it could be attributed to overfishing or some other cause. That study is summarised by Thomson (1959). As a part of that project a qualitative assessment of the distribution and abundance of benthic macrofauna was carried out (MacIntyre, 1959). Since then, only very limited benthic faunal sampling has been done in Lake Macquarie (Powis 1973, 1975). This paper presents qualitative information on the distribution and abundance of the macrofauna of the Lake collected between July 1979 and provides a comparison with the work done 23 years earlier.
