Abstract

Spectrographic analysis of /s, z/ duration and LPC analysis of /s, z/ noise spectra in single-word utterances of mild-moderate Broca’s aphasics and normal controls revealed aphasics’ normal control of /s, z/ duration. Aphasics’ fricatives revealed marked spectral shifts characteristic of a looser, less accurately placed /s, z/ articulatory constriction. Transcription analysis revealed moderate to severe laryngeal-articulatory dyscoordination and imprecision of lingual control. These findings suggest substantial phonetic, but little phonological impairment for simple single-word utterances by these Broca’s aphasics.
