Abstract

The condensation of 1,2-diaminoethane with thiodiglycolic acid in the presence of transition metal ions gave new types of mono and homobinuclear transition metal complexes of 18-membered dithiatetraazamacrocycles. The mode of bonding and overall geometry of the complexes has been inferred through UV–Vis, IR and 1H NMR spectral techniques as well as molar conductance and magnetic moment data. An octahedral geometry around the metal ion is suggested for [ML]X 2 (M=Co 2+, Ni 2+, Cu 2+ and Zn 2+; X=Cl or NO 3) as well as for [M 2LX 4] (M=Co 2+, Ni 2+ and Zn 2+; X=Cl or NO 3), while square planar geometry is proposed for [Cu 2LX 2]X 2 (X= Cl or NO 3).
