Abstract

Uniform and large scale ZnO nanorods were successfully prepared by a simple chemical precipitation without any structure directing agents, the prominent merit in this mild process is that the final products do not need subsequent calcinations in an oven. Depending on the synthetic conditions used, the products with hexagonal shape consist mainly of high regularly nanorods with an average diameters of 120 nm or so, while the aspect ratio can be controlled about 8. The ZnO nanorods exhibit a strong ultraviolet emission and a very weak blue band at room temperature. The growth mechanism for the formation of ZnO nanorods was preliminarily explained by polar crystal growth theory and lowest energy arguments.
