Abstract
Summary The effect of different temperatures on the water use efficiency (WUE) was studied under controlled environmental conditions with the C 4 -plant maize, the C 3 -plant sugar beet and other crop plants. The WUE of C 4 -plants was greater ( 40 ... 80 %) than the WUE of C 3 -plants by exposing at 296 K. Differences of WUE between C 4 - and C 3 -species were due to different intensities of photosynthesis. Only small differences of WUE were obtained by cultivating at the temperature of 289 K or lower temperatures.
