Abstract
Summary Photochemical activities as a function of temperature have been compared in chloroplasts isoa ted from frost-resistant and frost-sensitive wheat cultivars. An Arrhenius plot of the activity of the Hill reaction by chloroplasts isolated from frost-resistant winter wheat shows a change in slope at about 10°C. Between 10 and 30 C the activation energy or this reaction is 4.2 kcal · mole − 1 . Between 5 and 0°C the activation energy decreases to − 12 kcal · mole − 1 whereas the Hill activity of chloroplasts of non frost-resistant plants shows a constant activation energy over the temperature range between 0 and 30°C. The activation energy was 4.2 kcal · mole − 1 . This value was similar to that observed for the frost-resistant plants at temperatures above 10°C. The decrease in activation energy observed in frost resistant winter wheat leaves at low temperatures was dependent on the stage of vernalization.
