Abstract

An investigation of the sensitized fluorescence of thallium and mercury mixtures using a photomultiplier type of detection is discussed. Data are given to indicate the variation of the intensity of the thallium lines as a function of the temperature of the excess mercury. Explanation of results requires the use of Winan's partial selection rule, $\ensuremath{\Delta}J=0$, in addition to generally accepted ideas concerning energy transfer, emission, and absorption.
