Abstract

A closed circuit respiration chamber is described, for the estimation of heat production of newly born lambs by indirect calorimetry. Heat production can be measured to an accuracy of 0. 68 kcal (S.D.) under various combinations of temperature (from -10 to +50°C), humidity, wind (up to 550 cm/sec), and wetness of the fleece. The standard deviation of measurement of water evaporated was 0.50–0.75 g. A correction for leaks and imperfect measurement of temperature and pressure, in closed circuit respiration chambers, is described in the Appendix.
