Abstract

Temperatures in soil around plant roots grown in unshaded black polyethylene plant containers were recorded continuously during an Auckland mid-summer. A maximum temperature of 49.5°C was recorded 1 cm in from the irradiated side. During bright sun, temperatures at the interface of the container mix and the polyethylene were up to 6°C higher than the corresponding temperatures 1 cm in from the side. Temperature profiles of vertical sections of the soil reflected the dynamic nature of temperature variations within the rootball during a day.
