Abstract

Conductor temperature is one of the most important parameters for submarine cable in operation. In order to monitor this temperature accurately, the heating model is established, in which the thermal resistance between the two metal layers considered as the series thermal resistance of all the non-metal layers between these two layers. Besides, an all-fiber monitoring system is designed, in which the surface temperature of submarine cables is obtained from the distributed optical fiber sensing based on Brillouin Optical Time Domain Analysis, and the conductor current is measured by Fiber Optical Current Transducer installed at the terminal. Then, according to the IEC60287, the conductor temperature of the submarine cable can be calculated and monitored in real time. Compared with the traditional current transducer, the Fiber Optical Current Transducer can eliminate the effects caused by long-distance overhead lines and compensating reactor installed in the transformer substation. Consequently, the measured current is only coming from the cable conductor, and the accuracy of conductor temperature calculation can be guaranteed. This kind of online monitoring method has been applied in Hainan Interconnection Project with significant performance improvements.
