Abstract

Abstract Under dynamic conditions, localized plastic flow in metals is accompanied by a local rise in the temperature. In a series of experiments with steel specimens deformed in shear, the surface temperature was measured in the shear band and to either side of it as the deformation proceeded. This measurement was effected by employing a high speed infra-red radiation detection system. The results are compared to predictions based on analyses of other investigators.
