Abstract

The thermo-optic coefficient of the silicon which affects the coupling and transmission properties of the optical devices and hardly indicated in previous publications will be considered. In this paper, we present a new concept on design of compact electro-optic switch based on slotted silicon Photonic Crystal (PhC) directional coupler. Engineering the geometry of the switch and infiltration with polymer enhance slow light on structure and make the coupling length very short. The optimum design parameters to maximize slow light effect and shorten the switch length will be studied. We numerically demonstrate that switch length will be smaller than 3 μm which in comparison with normal coupling length is very short and make integration of switch with other SOI devices to be feasible. Here we show the accurate design and different sign of thermo-optic coefficient of polymer and silicon make the proposed structure stable on temperature variation over 60°C.
