Abstract

The temperature evolution of the optical birefringence of ferroelastic arsenic pentoxide is shown to reflect the order parameter behaviour in the temperature interval from 300 K to Tc=575.7 K. The phase transition is second order and the critical exponent of the order parameter is 0.509 (10); deviations from mean-field behaviour were found at temperatures closer than 5 K to Tc.
